Basic Border Management
SPRING (March–May)
-
Weed thoroughly to reduce competition for new growth
-
Cut back dead stems from last year’s perennials
-
Mulch with compost or bark to retain moisture and suppress weeds
-
Feed plants with an all-purpose fertiliser
SUMMER (June–August)
-
Deadhead spent flowers to keep things looking tidy and encourage more blooms
-
Weed regularly - little and often is best
-
Tie in or support tall or floppy plants
-
Trim edges of the border for a neat finish
AUTUMN (September–November)
-
Cut back faded perennials unless leaving for winter interest
-
Remove annuals and tidy up dying foliage
-
Mulch again if needed
-
Plant spring bulbs if desired
WINTER (December–February)
-
Minimal work needed - enjoy the structure of shrubs and grasses
-
Light pruning of shrubs if weather is mild
-
Check for mulch coverage around plant bases in very cold spells
