Basic Border Management

SPRING (March–May)

  • Weed thoroughly to reduce competition for new growth

  • Cut back dead stems from last year’s perennials

  • Mulch with compost or bark to retain moisture and suppress weeds

  • Feed plants with an all-purpose fertiliser

SUMMER (June–August)

  • Deadhead spent flowers to keep things looking tidy and encourage more blooms

  • Weed regularly - little and often is best

  • Tie in or support tall or floppy plants

  • Trim edges of the border for a neat finish

AUTUMN (September–November)

  • Cut back faded perennials unless leaving for winter interest

  • Remove annuals and tidy up dying foliage

  • Mulch again if needed

  • Plant spring bulbs if desired

WINTER (December–February)

  • Minimal work needed - enjoy the structure of shrubs and grasses

  • Light pruning of shrubs if weather is mild

  • Check for mulch coverage around plant bases in very cold spells
