Simple Plant Watering Advice

New Plants (First Year)

  • Water deeply and regularly, especially in dry spells

  • Focus on the base of the plant, not the leaves

  • Early morning or evening is best to avoid evaporation

Established Plants

  • Water only during prolonged dry spells

  • Give a thorough soak rather than a daily sprinkle

  • Borders with mulch need less frequent watering

Pots & Containers

  • Water more frequently, especially in hot weather

  • Ensure good drainage to avoid root rot

! Caution: Avoid Overwatering

  • Too much water can harm roots, especially in heavy or clay soil

  • Signs of overwatering: yellowing leaves, soft stems, or rotting roots

  • Let the top few inches of soil dry out before watering again

  • Always check soil moisture before watering - if it feels damp 2-3 inches down, hold off
